Health and Family Welfare Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has sought for detailed information from NEIGRIHMS into the death of a young man, who had been brought to the institute following an accident.
The man died on Sunday, the family said, after not receiving proper treatment while in the emergency room for four hours. NEIGRIHMS denied any negligence, saying its staff had done all they could to save the youth.
Videos of the incident, which have gone viral, captured the heated arguments between the friends and family of the victim and the hospital security staff. Police had to be called in to control the crowd.
Today, Lyngdoh said that, according to preliminary information, junior doctors and medical officers were present and were on duty that evening.
“I don’t know exactly what happened. In order to understand the situation completely, I have requested the director to share with me information on what preceded the conflict that occurred and what were the reasons that there was a loss of life,” she said.
Although the state’s Health Department is not in control of NEIGRIHMS, which is a central public hospital, the Meghalaya government can still intervene in the interest of the public, the minister added.
