The North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) has thrown its weight behind Acting Vice-Chancellor Sherwin M Sungoh’s call for an Academic Council meeting scheduled for tomorrow.
It had emerged yesterday that under-fire VC PS Shukla, who has been out of the state since late last year, opposed the meeting, saying that Sungoh had no right to summon the Academic Council. Shukla said that an illegitimate meeting would endanger the academic future of the varsity’s students because any decision taken at the meeting could be challenged in court and rendered invalid.
NEHUTA, which is ardently opposed to Shukla’s functioning, argued that Sungoh is empowered to perform VC duties in the absence of the regular VC.
Lakhon Kma, NEHUTA president, criticised Shukla for questioning the legality of Sungoh convening the meeting, calling it “laughable and shameful.”
NEHUTA accused Shukla of violating the NEHU Act, Statutes and Ordinances and expressed support for Sungoh in discharging her duties.
