The president of the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU), Sandy Sohtun, was arrested today and remanded to seven days’ judicial custody.
Sohtun was wanted by police over the alleged assault of an Assistant Professor, Alok Singh, on the NEHU campus here last week.
According to an FIR filed by Singh, who teaches in the Hindi Department, Sohtun and five others barged into his office and assaulted him on April 24. He alleged that his attackers also threatened to kill him while one of them held a pair of scissors at his throat.
The university and state government condemned the assault. However, today, a pressure group claimed without providing evidence that Sohtun had been framed by Singh.
Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that Sohtun was taken into custody following an FIR lodged by the victim and has been charged. He was produced before a judge at the Court of the District and Sessions Judge here.
When asked if more arrests could follow, Syiem said that the law would take its own course.
