The crisis in North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) is no longer confined to its Shillong campus as the protest has now spread to Tura campus.
Today, the NEHU students of Tura campus supported by Garo Students’ Union (GSU), and Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) held a protest at the campus against vice chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla for his “illegal” appointment of campus director Sujata Gurudev.
Demanding for the immediate resignation of Prof. Shukla, the students expressed solidarity with NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and asked Prof. Shukla to immediately step down as vice chancellor of the university.
The NEHU students of Tura campus with the support of GSU and GSMC have also announced indefinite strike from today till the demand is met.
“For progress and integrity, we demand a capable leader. No more incompetence, it’s time for real leadership. Rise for change, appoint a leader we can trust” the NEHU students of Tura campus said.
They also demanded immediate appointment of local pro vice chancellors both in NEHU Shillong and Tura campuses, equal pay for equal work for the NEHU staffs, appointment of joint registrar and deputy registrar in NEHU Tura campus, creation of more departments in the Tura campus, and immediate holding of election to the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) at the campus.
They also said that they have submitted memorandums from time to time to the vice chancellor on all these demands but he is yet to respond.
