The Department of Geology, North-Eastern Hill University celebrated Earth Day today with lectures focussing on space economy.
The lecture on “Planetary Remote Sensing” was presented by Ayan Chatterjee where he described the vast applications of remote sensing technologies to study the planetary atmospheres and surface processes.
Another lecture was delivered on “Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and its applications in Geosciences” by Neel Ranjan Boruah, where he shared the importance of SAR technique for observing geomorphological features including glacial, marine and fluvial changes and deciphering surface deformational features.
Various scientific approaches to observe and develop scientific and technological methods to confront climate change were also discussed emphasis on various issues related to climate change and disaster risk resilience especially due to the India’s role and participation in G20.
A national level quiz competition was also conducted by Dr. Shikhar Kumar amongst the 300+ registered participants from different parts of India using the online mode.
The quiz had questions to promote geosciences along with the G20 theme “One Earth, One Family and One Future”, and to spread awareness about environmental protection and global climate variability.
The first position was bagged by Shyamol Gogoi, an M.Sc student in NIT Rourkela, the second position went to Dibinus Kessar, M.Sc in Central University, Kerala and Megha Khati, M.Sc Central University, Kerala secured the third position. Consolation prizes were also awarded to the fourth and fifth position holders and certificates were given to those who participated.
Prof. Devesh Walia, Head, Department of Geology NEHU during the valedictory address spoke about the solutions to combat climate change and to activate everyone – governments, citizens, and businesses – to do their part. He congratulated winners of the quiz competition and urged all to live more sustainably to avoid the worst effects of climate change and to secure the earth for the future generation.
