North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) casual employees, under the umbrella of the All NEHU Workers’ Union (ANWU) has decided to intensify their protest to demand regularisation.
“We have taken a resolution during the executive council meeting that we will intensify our protest because NEHU authority is turning deaf ears to the demand raised by the union,” ANWU working president, Pyndapborlang L Nongpyiur said.
He said that the registered union under the provision of the Trade Union Act, 1926, is inclusive to all the casual/daily wages/contractual and any other workers working in the University. “The union will not turn its blind eyes to any difficulties/exploitation/harassment, any other issues faced by the workers,” he added.
On April 29 the union had submitted a list of demands to Vice-Chancellor Prof PS Shukla and had served a 30-day deadline to the varsity authorities to regularise the casual workers who have been working in the university for over 10 years.
The union also took up their grievances with Governor and the university’s Chief Rector, Satya Pal Malik last month.
NEHU has 621 non-teaching staff vacancies but does not hire anyone to fill these positions, instead preferring to overwork the casual employees, ANWU claimed.
