Shillong/Jowai, Nov 21:  National Milk Day was observed today to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurien, the “Father of the White Revolution” in India, which falls on November 26.

In West Khasi Hills, a programme was organised by the office of the Dairy Officer, Nongstoiñ, which was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner C.P. Mawkhon, along with other officers from the Dairy Department and the A.H. & Veterinary Department, members of the Dairy Cooperative Society and students from various schools.

Mawkhon said the district is blessed with vast open lands has great potential for cattle rearing. He urged dairy farmers to take progressive steps to increase milk production for the local markets and even beyond. Though challenges are inevitable when starting any venture, strong determination will help achieve goals and enable individuals to create their own livelihoods without relying on others, he said.

Awards were also presented for Best Dairy Cooperative Society 2024–2025 to Iatreilang Dairy Cooperative Society, and Best Progressive Dairy Farmer 2024–2025 to Alfred Kynshi.

Prizes were also given to the winners of Painting, Creative Arts, Signage, and Photography competitions held on various themes related to National Milk Day. Free milk was also distributed to all the participants who attended the programme.

In West Jaintia Hills, a function was held at the Jowai Dairy Plant, Mooralong.

Director of Dairy Development LS Shangpliang spoke about the significance of National Milk Day. He said that dairy farming in Meghalaya has gained importance only in recent years as people reared cattle mainly for meat and milk consumption was very low.  However, he said, people have begun to take up dairy farming now.

Shangpliang urged the public to support local milk producers, so that they can earn sufficient and stable income.

Dabna Challam (Promising Dairy Farmer) and Marcolos Lyngdoh, Secretary, Umhali PMPCS Ltd (Progressive Dairy Farmers) spoke about their experience in dairy farming and shared their journey.

A motivational award was also presented to one of the farmers in recognition of his contribution to the dairy plant.
