The Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP), Khliehriat circle has expressed concerns over the mushrooming of liquor shops in East Jaiñtia Hills district stating that these have promoted liquor consumption among the youth.
The organisation pointed out that many legal wine shops have sprang up in areas with no stringent measures taken up whereby “anyone can sell and everyone can indulge as per their wish.”
FKJGP president Michal Chyrmang in a statement here today said that as per the RTI availed there are 35 wine shops in Ladrymbai, 12 in Mokhep and nine at Dieng Shynrum. “It is surprising that in these small villages there are many wine shops with no regulation on the distance between each of them, thereby promoting mushrooming of such shops like food stalls,” he said.
The organisation further urged the excise department not to issue more licenses for setting up of liquor shops and to the rangbah shnongs not to grant no-objection certificates randomly because this will influence alcohol use among young people and a cause to various ills in the society.
