The Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) in collaboration with the National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM), Shillong continued with its legal awareness programme under its “Pan India Awareness & Outreach Programme as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
Today, the MSLSA held the programme at Ferrando Transit Shelter Home, Mawlai which was attended by the domestic workers of Mawlai localities and its adjoining areas.
The resource persons for the legal awareness programme were T.T. M. Sangma, Office on Special Duty, MSLSA, Daisily Thangkhiew and Banker-la-i-dor Sten, Legal Aid Counsels and social activist and TUR member Angela Rangad.
The topics covered during the programme were Fundamental Rights under article 14,15,19 with emphasis on right to life with dignity, Maintenance Rights, Juvenile Justice Act, POCSO Act, Child Marriage, Free Legal Aid, Labour laws and relevant of Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005.
There was an experience sharing from the domestic workers on loss of employment, long working hours, low wages, lack of public transport, inadequate relief received, lack of social security and other issues faced by them during the Covid- 19 lockdown.
After the technical sessions, dry rations were also distributed to all the participants.
