The tragicomedy that is the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) went up to another level today during protests led by the Non Gazetted Employees Association (NGEA) after two of the protesting employees were allegedly injured when the vehicle of an officer rammed into them.
Employees of the GHADC have been protesting over the non-payment of their wages for the past 34 months with the offices of the GHADC remaining shut. Recently security personnel were deployed after which some officers and MDCs have been attending office.
The NGEA have claimed that officials are removing vital paperwork from the offices of the GHADC for nefarious purposes. Therefore, in yet another farcical situation, its members have begun checking vehicles of officers and MDCs on exiting the GHADC premises.
“All this was being done without any harm to anyone or any vehicles being damaged. During this time, we came upon the vehicle of the assistant accounts officer, Glory Hasting R Marak, who was questioned on an earlier case of file theft from the office on May 20. We wanted to know as to where these files were being taken,” said an FIR filed with police by the NGEA members.
The employees claimed that Marak refused to wind down the window of his car and didn’t answer their queries. Instead, he rammed his vehicle into the agitating employees, leaving two female employees with minor injuries.
“He was trying to kill the protesting employees but we were able to escape. Two of us, however, suffered injuries,” added the FIR, which was filed at Tura Police Station.
Further police have been deployed to the site to prevent any more aggravation.
