Shillong, Sep 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate BSNL’s Swadeshi 4G network in Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura, marking a significant milestone in India’s digital journey. The launch, scheduled to take place in Jharsuguda, Odisha, will dedicate 92,633 new 4G sites, including over 14,000 towers under the 4G Saturation Project.
BSNL’s Chief General Manager for the NE-1 Circle, Daily Giri, highlighted that this indigenous 4G rollout places India among a select group of nations capable of developing and deploying their own telecom technology. The project aims to bridge the digital divide by providing affordable and reliable connectivity to remote areas.
In the North Eastern states, BSNL has planned 406 towers, with 238 in Meghalaya, 53 in Mizoram, and 115 in Tripura. So far, 246 towers have been commissioned, including 136 in Meghalaya, 17 in Mizoram, and 93 in Tripura. The Swadeshi 4G network covers multiple districts across the three states, with an estimated project cost of ₹1092 crore.
The initiative is expected to empower citizens and support BSNL’s recent profitability, with the company confident of sustaining momentum while delivering world-class services. Additional projects, including BOP BIP and Phase IX.2, are underway to further expand connectivity to border and remote areas.
