Shillong, Feb 9: The death toll in the dynamite explosion incident in Thangkso East Jaintia Hills district has risen to 28 with the death of an injured miner.
The victim has been identified as Raju Tamang (34) who died of burn injuries at NEIGRIHMS.
According to a relative of Tamang interviewed by reporters on Friday, he had been found a few hours after the blast on Thursday with burn injuries and was first brought to Woodland Hospital in Jowai and then shifted to Woodland Hospital in Shillong. Due to a lack of facilities he was subsequently moved to NEIGRIHMS.
No bodies were recovered from the site of the explosion in Thangsko today.
More illegally mined coal was seized by authorities today, around 38 tonnes in all at various parts of East Jaintia Hills.
East Jainti Hills district administration said till date, a compensation amount of Rs 24 lakh has been paid to eight victims and payment will continue to the families when submissions of documentary evidence has been secured.
