A 69-year-old milkman lost his life after being hit by an escort vehicle of the Assam Rifles convoy at Nongpoh Down Gate, near the Deputy Commissioner’s junction, on National Highway 6 this morning.
The victim has been identified as Jonga Bahadur Sunar of Shangbangla village in Ri-Bhoi district.
Police said the incident happened at around 10:20 am while the milkman, who was riding a bicycle, was crossing the road. The vehicle, a Thar bearing registration number ML 05 Y 3232 was driven by Sreekanth SS from the DGR Secretariat in Laitkor.
The vehicle was escorting the Director General of Assam Rifles to the Guwahati airport. Reportedly, after hitting the milkman, the vehicle also crashed into the divider of the four-lane road, causing one of its front tires to burst.
Due to the seriousness of his injuries, Sunar was later referred to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong, where he succumbed to his injuries.
