World Social Work Day, to recognise the contributions of social workers and highlights the importance of social justice, human rights, and social development was celebrated by the students and staff of Subakalai LP School in Laitsohpliah village with sharing of mid-day meal with the faculty of St. Edmund’s College and community members.
The event was organised by the Department of Social Work-PG (MSW) of St Edmunds College in collaboration with NESFAS, Shillong under the theme, “Buen Vivir: Shared Future for Transformative Change,” that emphasises the adoption of innovative, community-led approaches grounded in indigenous wisdom and harmonious coexistence with nature.
Sharing of the mid-day meal held significant importance during the programme as it demonstrated hospitality and fostered a sense of community within the school. It also provided an opportunity for cultural exchange where students from outside the state were able to experience local cuisine and customs, fostering understanding and appreciation for different cultures.
Headman Wan Marwein, Secretary of Laitsohpliah Babu Nestar Kharmawphlang, Head Teacher R. Nongrum, Senior Associate of NESFAS Janak Preet Singh, Dr. Rituparna Rajendra, HoD, and faculty members of the department of MSW school children, parents, and community members attended the program.
Singh shed light on NESFAS’s School Meal Initiative, emphasising the organization’s commitment to promoting sustainable food systems and nutrition security in various schools across the state.
Special performances also included a captivating presentation by the talented students of the school and musical performances by the MSW students.
