The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken suo moto cognizance into the assault of labourers engaged in the construction of the JN Stadium, Polo here.
The MHRC has issued a notice today to the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police to submit a detailed report within two weeks.
Workers engaged in construction works at the stadium had reported assaults yesterday during a drive initiated by the Khasi Students Union (KSU) to check work permits.
The union resumed its drive to check influx by carrying out its own check if labourers or those who enter the state posses documents. Labourers working in different construction sites in the state capital were asked to produce work permits and if found not to posses one are pushed back.
The KSU is peeved by the state government’s delay to implement the inner line permit (ILP) and Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016.
