The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken note of a complaint alleging excess, abuse of power and torture by the officer in charge of Dawki police station and other personnel against one Solin Suting (also reported as Sonil), a 65-year-old senior citizen.
The MHRC today directed the Director General of Police to submit a detailed report into the incident by July 1, 2024.
According to reports, Suting, a resident of Pyrdiwah village, was tortured on the premises of Dawki police station after he was arrested from Lad Darrang village on suspicion of being a Bangladeshi national. He was also reportedly bitten by two dogs while tied up and defenceless in the police station.
Police, however, denied that he was tortured, although they did admit that a dog had bitten him on the station premises. Suting also claimed that the police who arrested him were in an inebriated state and that he was left, injured and alone, outside his home village at 3am after being threatened with death if he spoke out and had to crawl home.
