Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced that Meghalaya has successfully secured the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the renowned Lakadong turmeric.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the 3rd Meghalaya Farmers’ Parliament today, the chief minister said that the initiative to secure the GI tag for Lakadong turmeric commenced four years ago.
The chief minister stated that the government will not look at schemes anymore. “I am very much against our officials and our ministers who focus on schemes because that narrows down our vision and our purpose,” he said, adding, “It is about the result that the scheme is going to give us, and it is very important as political leaders and as government officials to keep an eye on the objective and not on the scheme.”
Dr. Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner to East & Northeast India said, Meghalaya has joined the Under2 Coalition this month committing to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 or earlier. “Protecting and restoring nature, including forests is critical to delivering on net zero targets and building climate resilience. We must continue to work together to put nature at the heart of our response to climate,” he said.
Organised by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare in collaboration with Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBDA) and Hills Farmers’ Union (HFU), this annual event has evolved into a pivotal celebration, acknowledging the relentless efforts and invaluable contributions of local farmers to the agricultural landscape.
Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Alexander L. Hek and Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh also spoke on the occasion.
