      Meghalaya Day celebrated across state

      North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner AK Singh along with the District Meghalaya Day Awardees during the 53 Meghalaya Day celebrations on Tuesday.

      Along with the rest of the state, Meghalaya Statehood Day was observed today in all the districts.

      In East Jaintia Hills, a function was held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner’s office which was attended by government functionaries, traditional heads and students.

      In his address, Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi highlighted the significance of the day and said that in order to make Meghalaya a developed state, each and every citizen needs to introspect on what has been done in the last 53 years even as he encouraged government officials to continue their unwavering commitment in their respective capacities in the interest of the overall development of Meghalaya.

      He urged the citizens of the district to take advantage of the support system extended by the government with the aim of uplifting their livelihoods even as he highlighted the several initiatives undertaken by the state government for the development of the state in terms of education, health, etc.

      Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad commended on the uniqueness of Meghalaya while also heaping praise on the rich culture, tradition and heritage of the state. He also spoke of the unique culture where women are given immense respect in the family and society.

      Additional Deputy Commissioner J.U Kharpuri spoke on the importance and significance of the day even as she stressed on the importance of preserving Meghalaya’s unique culture which serves as a marker of its identity.

      In North Garo Hills, Deputy Commissioner AK Singh highlighted the transformational journey of Meghalaya. He said the state has come a long way in terms of socio economic development, the progress in education, infrastructural development and tourism.

      “While we celebrate these achievements it is also imperative that we acknowledge our responsibility towards preserving our environment and thereby creating sustainable livelihoods for the people”, he added.

      The DC further pressed upon all stakeholders to affirm their commitment in creating a prosperous, united and inclusive state.

      As part of the programme, the District Administration identified and felicitated members from distinguished fields who have brought fame and glory to the district.

      Legendary Singer of the Riprap Band, Browny R Marak, a well know weaver from the district Rajmita Rabha, a dedicated MLHP Dafiralyn M Dienghdoh, a female cricketer representing Meghalaya U -19 Womens Julitha Sangma and Singer Late  Hamilton Momin was also felicitated with the District Meghalaya Day Award.

      The Office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District too celebrated the day. Awards were presented to honour the Cleanest Locality in Shillong and the Best Staff/Employee of the Year, recognising their contributions to the district.

      Cultural performances from the children of Boys Home and Girls Home, Mawkasiang under the jurisdiction of District Child Protection Office (DCPO), further added to the vibrancy of the event.

      In her speech, Deputy Commissioner R. M. Kurbah highlighted the young demographics of Meghalaya and the importance of maintaining the state’s cultural identities in everyday life while also urging the audience to focus on the future of the state and making a difference.

      In Ri Bhoi, the celebration commenced with a Meghalaya Day Run from Dulongnar village to NSCA Indoor Stadium Umlyngkdait flagged off by the Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal.

      A visual short story showcasing the state’s history during the Hills State’s movement was presented by the office of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations and also a slide presentation presented by Professor Banshan Kharkongngor on the non-violence movement of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo people demanding for state independence.

      Umsning MLA, Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh who spoke during the celebration said that the state has a long way to go and called on the citizens to have a goal and count the changes that had taken place. He urged people to work together with sincerity and dedication for the state’s progress.
