After bearing the brunt of barbs yesterday, the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lashed out at Congress Party leader Rahul Gandhi over his “bundles of falsehoods and figments of imagination”.
Gandhi had stopped in Ri-Bhoi as part of his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra yesterday and he told a large gathering that the Congress stood for the rights and traditions of the people of the state, unlike the BJP, which, he claimed, had not done enough on including the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
In a press release today, the BJP state unit largely raked up the Congress’s decades of rule at the Centre and state levels.
Asking Gandhi to explain how the tradition, history and way of life of the people of Meghalaya were being attacked, the BJP listed out the various activities carried out by the saffron party’s morchas at the grassroots to improve people’s lives.
The state unit of the BJP also said that this is not something that could be said about the Congress, a party that ruled Meghalaya for approximately four decades unhampered.
The release also claimed that the BJP’s membership in Meghalaya is on the increase while it is continuing to decline for the Congress and this could not possibly be happening if the people felt that the BJP was against their rights and traditions.
The BJP also said that while it has honoured the heroes of the state, the Congress had never done so when in power. It also lambasted the Congress for not including Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule when it was in power for decades.
