The theme song and mascot for the 6th Meghalaya Games, to be hosted by Jowai this month, were unveiled at a curtain raiser here today.
The theme song is “Niom Beit Naphang”, while the mascot is a clouded leopard called U Kiang.
The Games will have its opening ceremony on January 20 but the football event will begin earlier, on January 15. Not all of the 29 competitive and demonstration disciplines will be held in Jowai, with nearby Wahiajer playing host to several, while golf and swimming will take place in Shillong.
Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri, local MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, Meghalaya State Olympic Association officials and district civil and police officials were present at the curtain raiser today.
Existing facilities in the area in and around Jowai are being utilised, with schools, colleges and community halls all playing their part. The minister said that investments in these will benefit the institution concerned long after the Games conclude.
Warjri acknowledged the collective efforts of government officials, local representatives, and community organisations in supporting the vision and extended his best wishes to the athletes preparing for the upcoming events.
