East Khasi Hills police today arrested a man accused of stabbing his wife in their home on November 1.
Sources said 60-year old Suresh Prasad Singh was arrested soon after he surrendered to the Laban police station and was remanded to seven days judicial custody by the court.
Sources said Singh belongs to a well-know business family in Shillong and one of the directors of the Shillong Club, a member of the Rotary Club and other philanthropic organisations.
In the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the victim, Poonam Singh stated that she was stabbed by the accused during an argument after she had asked for money to buy groceries.
Poonam had told Highland Post that she was subjected to domestic violence for many years and police has never registered an FIR, which had to lodge a complaint with the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) in 2017.
The case was kept on hold after she had left the city to accompany her children who had to pursue higher studies. Following the incident, the commission has decided to re-look into the case.
Meanwhile, sources said the public prosecutor had strongly objected to the bail plea of the accused stating that the crime was serious in nature based on the medical report of the victim. It is also learnt that the weapon used to commit the crime had gone missing.
