The opposition Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) today became the first party in the State to announce the candidate for the Lok Sabha election due in May next year.
The party has nominated its general secretary Dr. Ricky A J Syngkon as the candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.
Dr. Syngkon is currently teaching in the Commerce Department of North Eastern Hill University.
Addressing a press conference here, VPP vice-president Dr. Kara H. Chen said that the announcement of the party’s candidate well ahead of time would enable party workers at the grassroot level to plan, prepare and work in advance for the election.
Dr. Chen also informed that besides Dr. Syngkon, there were two applicants for party ticket for the Lok Sabha polls.
“Some individuals also met our party president personally to express their willingness to contest the election,” he said
The two applicants were Dr. Bahunlang Khron, an assistant professor at PGT College and Prof. Lakhon Thabah, a professor at NEHU, in addition to Dr Ricky Syngkon.
Maintaining that the VPP would not have any truck with any political party during the Lok Sabha polls, Chen said, “We will go solo; we will not seek the support of other parties, whether national or regional. We need the support of the people, not any political party. In previous Assembly elections, we contested on our own, and this time too, we will do the same.”
Dr. Chen also informed that the VPP is currently in the process of screening candidates for the MDC elections scheduled early next year.
