The Lympung Ki Hynriew Shnong (LKHS), an umbrella organisation for six localities in the city – Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Wahthapbru, Mission Compound and Mawkhar – has suggested that the government construct an extension to the current outpatient department of Shillong Civil Hospital at the Public Works Department complex in Barik near the hospital.
The location has been in the spotlight recently after the government proposed constructing a shopping mall there instead of an earlier proposal (which was accepted by the state government) to create a public park on the site.
While appreciating the idea of a park, the LKHS said that in view of the Covid-19 pandemic and to increase capacity at the congested hospital, an extension with “a state of the art diagnostic centre amidst the greenery (should be built) in the interest of the people at large.”
The organisation also supported the government’s decision to keep Motphran and Khyndailad free of hawkers. It also argued in favour of the strict adherence to quarantine of Covid-19 patients in dedicated institutions identified by the government so as not to create a sense of fear and anxiety in the public.
