Headmen, women’s organisations (Seng Longkmie) and those representing the youth (Seng Samla) were urged to keep a close watch on drug abuse in order to help the authorities combat the menace.
The District Social Welfare Officer of Ri-Bhoi held a programme today here to observe the International Day Against Drugs and Illicit Trafficking (which will actually fall this Sunday).
The programme was attended by the DSWO, E Kharchandy, psychologist at Nongpoh Civil Hospital B Pamshong, KRIPA Foundation counsellor Meban Tariang, Deputy Superintendent of Police S Pasleiñ, Wisdom Rehabilitation Centre director Rev David Jamir and headmen of different villages, Seng Samla and Seng Longkmie.
Speakers expressed grave concern over the high number of drug users and drug suppliers not only in Ri-Bhoi but in the state in general.
One of the aims and objectives of the programme was to convey a message to people of the community and to urge headmen, Seng Samla and Seng Longkmie to take a close look and keep an eye on the increase in numbers of drug users and suppliers in their neighbourhoods and to eliminate this menace that can harm the future of the youths and put lives of people in danger as drug use has been linked to various crimes.
