Senior UDP leader Bindo M. Lanong today said there is very little hope for the Congress party to come back to power in the 2023 elections in the State. He also foresees the same kind of coalition government with four-five parties forming the government in 2023.
Speaking to media persons here, Lanong who in the past had served as Deputy Chief Minister in a Congress-led government from 2010 to 2013, said that there is very little hope for the Congress with only more than a year remaining before the next general election.
“They (the Congress) have ruled Meghalaya for more than 38 years but did nothing and neither showed signs of doing anything on any issues whether the boundary, inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages, ILP, employment, and others,” he said.
With regards to the Congress performance in the recent Assembly by-elections, Lanong said that the Congress had made false claims without justification that it would emerge victorious in all the three constituencies where the by-polls were held.
“The Congress was divided in all the three constituencies. The four-time Congress MDC Lamphrang Blah who had been with the party for more than 20 years left the party and fought against the party nominee on NPP ticket and the Congress was left broken. Norbert Myrboh who also was with the Congress for many years left the party and fought against Highlander Kharmalki of Congress. The same goes with the candidate from Rajabala who was a Congress MDC but left the party and contested on UDP ticket. So the Congress could not justify their claims,” Lanong said.
He also alleged that money culture and poaching of MLAs through money power has always been the game of the Congress from the past.
“There are so many proofs on money power used by the Congress and we still have a check as proof with us issued by a Congress candidate in the 2018 election that was rejected by a recipient who also filed an FIR but nothing happened. I think the Congress needs to introspect because the money culture has always been the Congress way,” Lanong stated.
