Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem inaugurated the 5 kilometre road from Warwar to Khrang yesterday.
The road was constructed under the Central Road Fund and cost Rs 3.65 crore.
This 5km stretch is part of the 25km Mawkdok-Khatarshnong Road.
This Mawkdok-Khatarshnong road is an important link as it connects a number of villages in the area like Swer, Mawrah, Mawthawtieng, Kshaid, Warwar, Khrang, Kongthong, Mawshuit and others.
These areas produce agricultural products like bay leaves, broomstick and ginger.
Blacktopping of the road had begun in previous years under the State Plan Fund but the project could not be completed till Khrang.
It was only in 2018-19 that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways under the Central Road Fund Scheme sanctioned an amount of Rs 3.65 crore for blacktopping and improvement of the remaining 5km.
Officials from the Public Works Department also informed that the 1.81km road to Kshaid has been completed.
Further, they informed that the blacktopping of the road to Kongthong will be complete by February.
In his speech, Mylliem, expressed his gratitude to the officers and staff of PWD for their efforts in bringing the road connectivity to the region. According to him, road connectivity is the backbone for the overall development of any place.
Mylliem said that the road will go a long way in improving the economy and overall development of the region, which largely depends on agriculture.
He also said that completion of the road has eased the travel and communication for the people residing in these areas tremendously.
“I along with the people of the region, are filled with immense joy on this auspicious day as the people had for a long time, yearned and waited for proper road connectivity to the region which has been finally fulfilled with the inauguration of the road,” Mylliem said.
Others present at the inauguration included PWD Secretary T G Nengnong, Laitkroh-Khatarshnong Block Development Officer P S Tynsong, PWD (Roads) Superintending Engineer Sainia Kyndiah, PWD Sohra Division Executive Engineer K B Makdoh, Syiem of Hima Sohra Freeman Syiem, Khrang village headman N Shabong.
