The largest haul of marijuana in the state was discovered by Ri Bhoi police during a check conducted at Lad Umsaw.
Police said they seized more than 280 packets of the drug that weighs 4,746.406 kgs, which has an estimated of Rs 20 crore.
Police said they arrested one person identified as Babulal Sheikh of Osmanabad, Maharashtra.
Ri Bhoi Superintendent of Police, Jagpal Singh Dhanoa said the check was conducted yesterday to eliminate illegal contraband substances in the run up for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
Sheikh was transporting the drug in a Tata truck NL 01-AH-5853. Cash of Rs 3,760 and a mobile phone was seized from his possession.
A case under the NDPS Act has been registered and investigation is on.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said it was a phenomenal job done by Ri Bhoi police. “This goes without saying that this huge bust has prevented a tidal wave of harm, protecting countless lives and communities from the destructive grip of drugs,” he wrote on X.
He said the fight is not over and called on citizens to join hands, report any suspicious activity to make Meghalaya a safer, healthier state for all.
