A house was partially destroyed by a landslide in West Khasi Hills today morning.
According to reports, heavy rainfall triggered a landslide at Markasa village under Mawthadraishan block in which a house located in the slope of a hill was partially damaged.
The house belonged to Aitidolin Lyngdoh Peinlang. However, nobody was injured in the incident.
The heavy rains also inundated many low lying areas including paddy fields in the area.
Meanwhile, traffic resumed today on the National Highway-6 in East Jaintia Hills after it was closed for a few hours due to a landslide at Lumshnong.
Reports of flooding were also received from Huroi in East Jaintia Hills after heavy rains lashed the area today.
According to village headman Golden Marbaniang, several houses located in the lower areas of the village have been submerged by flood water and the affected villagers shifted to safer places.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) today predicted heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy rainfall over Meghalaya till July 20.
According to the IMD, the east-west trough from northwest Bihar to east Assam now runs to Meghalaya across the cyclonic circulation over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal at 0.9 km above mean sea level.
“The cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and neighbourhood persists and now seen between 1.5 and 5.8 km above mean sea level. Under its influence, moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over Meghalaya during 16th to 20th June 2024, isolated heavy to extreme with exceptionally heavy rainfall is likely to occur on 18th June 2024. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely to occur over most parts of Meghalaya during 16th June to 20th June 2024,” the IMD said.
