The fear of so-called plastic rice has gripped Meghalaya once again, which led the Khasi Students Union (KSU) of Ri-Bhoi to conduct a surprise inspection of a warehouse stocking rice in Khanapara on Friday.
However, no plastic rice was found at the scene.
Although it is an issue that raises its head every so often across the globe, there has never been credible evidence provided to show that plastic rice is being substituted for the edible variety. That has not stopped many stories of plastic rice being circulated by individuals and groups or reported by websites looking to create clickbait.
Last month the KSU demanded that rice of one particular brand be seized by the authorities because it allegedly contained plastic.
