Shillong, Dec 9: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has joined in opposition to a proposed cement plant at Daistong village in East Jaintia Hills and has appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to postpone the December 19 public hearing.
The Jaintia National Council (JNC) yesterday decided to hold a public protest against the plant on Wednesday outside the DC’s office in Khliehriat.
Echoing the JNC, the KSU said that the proposal for the plant involves illegal land transfer, procedural violations and threats to the community’s livelihood through potential pollution of important water sources accessed by villagers for farming and other purposes.
The KSU also alleged that the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) and Single Window Agency (SWA) are rushing clearance without scrutiny.
The pressure group demanded the postponement of the December 19 public hearing, a probe into the land deal and officials’ conduct, etc.
