The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has prohibited change of surname or clan and to take or assume any other Khasi surname/clan through an affidavit without its written consent.
A notification signed by the KHADC Registration Authority on June 1 said this is done as per provisions of section 12 of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) Act 1997.
The district council said any person who wishes to change the surname or clan has to obtain written consent from the Registration Authority and the Executive Committee and also instructed all competent authorities within its jurisdiction not to accept the change without the written consent.
