Shillong, May 28: The Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) today said that its president, DR Lyngdoh Nonglait’s decision to contest the Shillong Lok Sabha by-election is “purely his personal choice” and the body has “no connection whatsoever” with it.
The clarification comes amid social media chatter questioning the society’s credibility after Nonglait entered the race on a National People’s Party (NPP) ticket.
KAS said its members include doctors, engineers, farmers, politicians, academicians, artists, designers, religious leaders and traditional heads who write on diverse subjects. “There has never been any restriction on individual members participating in politics or religious activities in their personal capacity,” the society said in a statement.
However, KAS as a collective “has always refrained from active involvement in political campaigns or religious affiliations” and remains focused on literature.
Nonglait has formally handed over charge to the vice-president during the election process. The KAS general council accepted the arrangement at its meeting today after which the clarification was issued.
