The Khasi Author Society (KAS) has decided to seek the status report from the State government on the inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
“We will also soon meet Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and urge him to aggressively pursue with the centre on this demand,” KAS president DRL Nonglait said.
Nonglait said that once the inclusion happens Khasi will be one of the subjects in the UPSC Examination besides many other benefits.
The KAS plans to come up with a Khasi dictionary and the project is expected to be complete within three years.
Padma Shri, Prof. Badaplin War informed that six research associates have been tasked to document the Khasi language in different working areas such as drama, literature, arts, music or any other form of communication so that the language gets the recognition it deserves.
She said the scholars will collect all the Khasi words and the KAS has decided to purchase equipment to record pronunciations.
Nonglait added that the proposed dictionary will help youth, the public and future generation to have a better knowledge on the usage of Khasi words in their day to day life especially for academic purposes.
Meanwhile, during its general meeting the society re-elected Nonglait as its president. The new office bearers also include Dr KD Ramsiej as vice president, Dr RP Kharshiing – general secretary, DR MM Khymdeitas – joint secretary and P Kharshiing – finance secretary and five executive members.
