To provide jail inmates with opportunities for self-improvement, education, and rehabilitation through access to books, the West Jaintia Hills District Legal Services Authority held a community-driven book donation campaign at the District Prison and Correctional Home, Jowai.
A wide array of educational materials was handed to the incarcerated population that include spiritual, fiction, self-help, educational and training guides, designed to foster both personal growth and educational advancement.
The initiative began through a campaign launched in December 2024. The donated books will be used to enrich the prison’s library, providing inmates with resources that promote personal reflection, educational achievement, and the development of useful skills.
The programme was held at the prison on Saturday which highlighted the importance of education in the rehabilitation process. The book donation drive was launched in response to the DLSA’s ongoing commitment to improving the living conditions and rehabilitation programs available to prisoners. By facilitating access to books, the authority hopes to support inmates in their journey toward personal development and successful reintegration into society.
The DLSA said it is still accepting book donations, with contributions being collected at the office through pick-ups and encouraged the public to continue supporting the cause, as it promises to have a lasting, positive impact on the lives of the district’s incarcerated population
