Jowai, Oct 17: A new office building of Jowai Civil Defence & Home Guards was inaugurated today at Hali Synnah Hali in Mihmyntdu, Jowai.
Constructed at a cost of Rs 9 crores, the office is expected to enhance and strengthen the operational capabilities of the civil defence and home guards.
Minister in charge Brenning A Sangma and Health Minister, who is also the local MLA, Wailadmiki Shylla attended the function as guests.
Speaking at the function, Sangma remarked that the new office building with its well-designed space will enhance the efficiency and dedication of the home guards and civil defence, enabling better coordination and service delivery.
He highlighted the department’s vital role in Meghalaya’s disaster preparedness and response system. He said the department has trained thousands of volunteers in disaster management, search and rescue operations, and community awareness who act as first responders and lifesavers before external help arrives, often saving lives during the “golden hour.”
Sangma informed that the department is also converting two battalions into two companies of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to strengthen disaster response capacity in times of disaster and crisis.
Acknowledging the great work of Home Guard Volunteers engaged in state traffic regulations, he assured timely payment of duty allowances and said that the government is committed to providing resources, training and recognition to strengthen civil defence and home guards for continued service excellence.
Shylla acknowledged the invaluable contribution of the department, the silent workers whose efforts often go unnoticed. Their dedication has been evident in major programs, natural calamities and notably during COVID-19 pandemic. He said today’s building reflects the government’s commitment to providing the necessary infrastructure to enhance service delivery.
He stressed the importance of providing citizens with basic training for emergencies. Recalling a suggestion from a young girl about self-defence in schools, he noted that such training should be extended to all, as emergencies can occur unexpectedly.
Shylla also urged the department to expand training opportunities for youth, particularly for those who cannot effort a private agencies training course. He mentioned that many government departments also prefer volunteers trained by the home guard and civil defence and requested that more such training initiatives be made available across the state, including West Jaintia Hills and other regions.
