The CEO of the Shillong Municipal Board will head a joint committee to look into the vexed issues surrounding the Marten landfill, it was decided today.
Last month, the Seng Samla Mawlai Pyllun (SSMP), aggrieved by the stench emanating from the site and concerned by safety aspects, highlighted Marten’s problems after judging that the Urban Affairs Department had done little in the way of tackling the problem.
Today, the youth organisation met with minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and they both agreed to the appointment of the joint committee.
After the meeting, SSMP general secretary Samran Syiem said, “The minister has assured us that he will do whatever he can to ensure that the Marten issue is resolved.”
Dhar told them that his department is working hard to ensure that a new landfill site is identified as soon as possible. After visiting the site on July 22, he had called for a meeting of all stakeholders.
