Shillong, Dec 8: The Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) today resolved to hold a public protest on Wednesday in Khliehriat to oppose a proposed cement plant in Daistong village, East Jaiñtia Hills.
The JNC blamed “continuous government silence” for its decision. The group has opposed the cement plant due to allegations that the Land Transfer Act has been violated, that no permissions were received from the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council and that the project does not adhere to environmental rules.
The Wednesday protest will take place outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
In a message, the JNC said, “We urge residents of the concerned areas especially the people of Daistong and nearby communities affected by the Shree Cement proposal: do not fear and do not feel uncomfortable. JNC stands firmly with you. Come join us on December 10.”
