The state government will soon be able to restart the issuance of challans for the export of limestone, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed today.
Earlier this year, the Meghalaya High Court had questioned whether the minor minerals licence was being misused in the export of limestone. The court, in June, ruled that limestone could only be classed as a minor mineral if it was used as a building material.
Tynsong said that the High Court today gave an “oral observation” that limestone, whether a minor or major mineral, should not be banned from export.
“We are happy that in today’s hearing the High Court has given its oral observation not to ban the export of both the minor or major limestone,” Tynsong said. “The government is going to issue challan again to exporters whether major or minor outside the state and country,” he said, adding that the High Court has listed this case for 15 days from today.
