The Meghalaya Chess Association (MCA) celebrated International Chess Day here yesterday with the 1st Meghalaya State Senior (above 50 years) Chess Championship 2024.
The chief guest was Director of School Education and Literacy Swapnil Tembe. The MCA also used the occasion to felicitate four arbiters and two outstanding players at international events.
In the championship, Ardhendu Sekhar Mandal (East Khasi Hills District Chess Association) took first place, followed by Jefferson V Lyngdoh (EKHDCA) in second, Tenderly Dkhar (Jaintia Hills District Chess Association) in third, Bonney J Kharbani (West Khasi Hills District Chess Association) in fourth and Paiadaohi Lhuid (JHDCA) in fifth.
Readystar Nongsiej (JHDCA) and DS Shongwan (EKHDCA) were first and second in the above 60 years category.
The two players who were felicitated were Ras Lal Upadhaya and Advitiya AG. The arbiters honoured were Th Biju Singh (international arbiter), Amar Bhandari (FIDE arbiter), Sumar Selon Ki Lamin Khonglah (senior national arbiter) and Pretty Karki Thapa (senior national arbiter).
