Shillong, Sep 1: The District Enforcement and Investigation Team (DEF) of South West Garo Hills has cracked a series of theft cases involving government and private properties across the region.
A joint inter-state raid was conducted with the assistance of Assam Police in Mankachar area on August 29. The key accused, Iftakul Islam (43), a resident of Thakuranbari on the Assam-Meghalaya border, was apprehended. A search of his premises led to the recovery of several stolen items, including batteries, copper wires, an abrasive cutting machine and other materials linked to multiple theft cases registered at Ampati Police Station.
A pickup truck suspected to have been used to transport stolen property was also seized. Initial investigations suggest that the accused is part of an organised gang operating across Garo Hills and parts of Mankachar, Assam, targeting government installations and private properties.
In a follow-up operation today, the DEF arrested two more accused persons – Amirul Islam (23) and Shahidul Islam (26) – both also from Thakuranbari. Further investigation is underway to trace more stolen property and apprehend absconding suspects.
