As heavy rains continued to lash various parts of Assam with rivers rising above dangerous levels causing floods and inundation across rural and urban areas, the Indian Army has stepped in to carry out relief and rescue operations.
Eleven composite columns were deployed at various locations in Hojai, Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Darrang, Tamulpur and Kamrup rural districts of Assam.
In the intense and difficult rescue operations in extreme conditions around 3000 stranded locals have been brought to safety, a statement here today said.
“During the flood rescue operations in Hojai, when rescue columns arrived at the site, they found entire habitation completely submerged. Since then they are continuously carrying out rescue tasks on a war footing in worst affected areas of Radha Nagar, Komarkata, Doboka and Hojai Circle of Hojai district, Assam, thereby saving thousands of lives including children, women and elderly people,” officials said.
Officials also informed that there were stuck on a log for 12 hours and a woman with her one month old child was also brought to safety with compassion and care.
The Indian Army also swiftly responded to a distress call in Kamrup rural district and rescued 136 locals from Kaalajal village. Simultaneously operations continued in the village of Katalmora of Nalbari district where 36 locals were rescued.
Standby columns at Tamulpur also rescued stranded people at Dakhin Gandhibari last night, officials added.
