Officers from three police stations in North Garo Hills have seized huge quantities of illicit alcohol in the district in separate operations.
The bootleggers, who fled upon the approach of the policemen, left behind four cars and eight motorcycles, all of which were seized.
In the first case, based on inputs that many illegal activities were taking place in the Chidaret area, a police team raided the market and seized a huge amount of country-made liquor as well as IMFL from the black market.
The bootleggers, who were doing brisk business until the raid, ran after seeing the approaching police team while abandoning their bikes and vehicles.
In the second case, police recovered at least 440 litres of country-made alcohol from the house of one Bisring Basumatary of Tilapara, Mendipathar.
The seizure of the brew was then informed to the Deputy Superintendent of Excise who instructed the team to destroy the illicit booze on the spot due to the difficulty in transporting the massive quantity.
The liquor was destroyed today by the police in the presence of witnesses while two jerry cans containing some of the alcohol were brought to the police station for further necessary action.
An offence report will be forwarded to the Excise Department tomorrow for legal action to be taken.
A third case saw the seizure of illicit liquor from Gokul, which is under Bajengdoba Police Station.
