Police are hoping for an early breakthrough in the recent murder of two persons in Ichamati area under the Shella Assembly constituency of East Khasi Hills.
On March 27, Esan Singh and Sujit Dutta were allegedly lynched by miscreants following a protest called by some organisations against the Citizenship Amendment Rules at Ichamati.
Their bodies were found at Ichamati and Dalda respectively. The victims are labourers working in limestone quarries in the area.
According to police sources, some suspects have been identified and more investigation is going on to ascertain their involvement in the crime.
“Very soon we will make a breakthrough in the case,” police sources said.
It may be noted that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had yesterday said that few people have been identified in connection with the murder of two labourers.
“In fact right now the police have identified a few people and they are searching for them. We will see and we will update you as soon as possible but as per law we will move forward and whoever is responsible will be brought to justice,” Sangma had told media persons.
“I don’t want to name or tell the numbers but we have already identified and we are moving forward,” he added.
Meanwhile, police personnel are camping in Ichamati and conducting regular patrolling in the area to instill confidence among the local populace.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Linguistic Minority Development Forum (MLMDF) has sought permission for holding a sit-in-protest on April 7, against the murder of two labourers at Ichamati.
In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, Forum president S K Choudhury sought permission to conduct an eight-hour sit-in protest below the steps of the old Assembly building at Khyndai Lad on April 7 from 9 am to 5 pm.
Stating that the protest was to express solidarity and demand justice for the tragic and brutal murder of the two persons, the Forum also demanded immediate arrest of the murderers and all suspects in the case.
However, local pressure groups such as HITO, KSU, FKJGP and HNYF have threatened to stage a similar protest at the site if the authorities allowed the Forum to hold the sit-in protest.
