ICAR-KVK West Garo Hills held a programme to release 109 crop varieties at the KVK campus today.
The programme was attended by 45 farmers and KVK staff. Special lectures on centrally-sponsored schemes and flagship programmes were delivered.
Speakers included Priyanka Saha, Sagarika Borah, Tarun K Das, Jayashree Mohanta and Monical Suresh Singh.
Singh elaborated on the 109 varieties of crops that were released, comprising 23 varieties of cereals, nine rice, two wheat, one barley, six maize, one sorghum, four millet, 10 pulses, seven oilseeds, seven fodder, seven sugarcane, five cotton, one jute and 40 varieties of horticultural products.
“Use of these varieties will help us in mitigating climate change, add to bio-fortification and increase farmer’s income,” a KVK press release said today.
The road map of increasing farmers’ income was also discussed in detail, which included increasing production, reducing production cost, giving fair price for agricultural produce, compensation for loss in natural disasters, diversification of agriculture, fruits, flowers, medicine, bee keeping, value addition, etc.
