Hynniewtrep Youths Council (HYC) president Roy Kupar Synrem today said that the pressure group will continue to fight against corruption in the state.
The HYC celebrated its 10th anniversary with a function in New Shillong, coinciding with the death anniversary of freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem.
Reminding about the alleged roofing sheet scam that the organisation complained about with the Meghalaya Lokayukta, Synrem said that the fight against corruption will be one of the HYC’s biggest priorities.
Quoting Pope Francis that “Corruption is paid for by the poor”, he said rampant corruption will have adverse effects on the common man, especially the marginalised families.
He called upon the legal authorities, various NGOs, village heads, media and others to fight together to end corruption that, he said, is deeply rooted in society.
Synrem also stressed the evils of drug addiction that has spread beyond the urban areas to villages and every corner of Meghalaya and the urgent need to tackle this menace.
“We also want the state government to come up with rehabilitation centres in every district of the state so that our youth gets the opportunity to return to their normal life and to arrest the kingpins and the drug lords,” he said.
Other priorities for the HYC are the introduction of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and the protection of the state’s borders and culture.
