The East Jaintia Hills unit of the Hynniewtrep Youths Council (HYC) submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner to draw his attention to the plight of residents of remote villagers in the district.
According to the HYC’s Preios Pale and Arky Lamare, the villages of Huroi, Hingaria, Lahalein and Lejri do not have adequate healthcare facilities, despite repeated requests for infrastructure to be brought up to scratch.
While there is a health sub-centre at Huroi, which caters to a population of around 5,000, the HYC said that it lacks basic facilities, equipment, staff and medicines. It also has damaged electrical fittings, cracks in the walls and broken windows.
Other matters raised include the need for better road connectivity, as the road from Sonapur to Huroi-Hingaria is in desperate need of repair. The people of the area have to instead turn towards neighbouring Bangladesh for supplies of basic needs. Mobile phone coverage is poor, at least from the Indian side, so much so that villagers use Bangladesh connections. Another issue raised by the HYC is the deficit in electricity connections and supply.
