The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has strongly opposed the re-appointment of the retired Chief General Manager of the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC).
Speaking to reporters, HYC general secretary Roy Kupar Synrem said that Puranjan Das retired as the CGM of the MTDC on March 31, 2023 but was re-appointed to the same post on a contractual basis from April 1 to September 30.
The HYC had sent a letter opposing the reappointment to the MTDC in May. Synrem said that the reappointment of Das is a drawback to the promotion of those working at the MTDC, including aspiring youth who are trying for employment.
“After we learnt that the MTDC board of directors were to have a meeting today at the State Convention Centre, we came here to protest and oppose the extension of service of Das,” he said.
Informing that the Chairman of the MTDC, Sanbor Shullai MLA, invited them for talks, Synrem said that Shullai told them that Das had been allowed to continue for six months owing to the Model Code of Conduct being in force for the Assembly elections and Sohiong by-election, which meant that the MTDC, a public company, could not advertise the vacancy.
At the end of the contract, the MTDC will float an advertisement for the post of CGM, the HYC was told.
