The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC), Ri-Bhoi Sepngi, has filed a complaint with the Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner over plying of overloaded trucks through the Umrit-Umling single-lane road.
The HYC said that the unsafe driving habits of these vehicles, coupled with their excessive weight, pose a threat to the residents and commuters. The bridge in Lailad village, with a designated load-bearing capacity of 9 tons is at risk of collapse, the HYC said.
Stating that the issue has been raised thrice the HYC said, “Notwithstanding our previous entreaties to the district administration, this issue persists, necessitating our renewed appeal for efficacious intervention. We urge you to take prompt and decisive action to alleviate this hazard, failing which, we shall seek any alternative recourse as we deem fit.”
