Tura MP Saleng Sangma has said that the Congress has gone to the people of Gambegre with important issues but machineries of the government have been misused to secure a win in the by poll.
“We have raised and highlighted the menace of drugs, smuggling of areca nuts, sugar, school dropout, teachers protesting in the street, non-payment of the ASHA workers, besides many other truths that remained unfulfilled,” he said.
“It’s the people’s choice if they reciprocate what we have highlighted,” he added.
He alleged that the government machinery has been misused to bulldoze the system to win elections and that even pilot escorts have been used to distribute money to the electorates.
Stating that 10 per cent of the youth population is addicted to drugs, he questioned who is going to take responsibility. “Whose drugs are being supplied to these 3 lakh youths? If the government is sincere then these would not have been affected by drugs,” he added.
The former Gambegre MLA downplays talk about underdevelopment in the constituency stating that all the constituencies in Garo Hills are the same. “They should also ask about all the constituencies in Garo Hills because it is Conrad Sangma’s family who have ruled Garo Hills for many years as union ministers and chief ministers,” he quipped.
Hoping that the Congress will retain the seat, he took on the common jibe ‘Congress is a sinking ship’ and questioned, “Who has hundreds of MPs. How many MPs do the NPP have?”
