The Meghalaya High Court has upheld the plea of Ricky A J Syngkon, a teacher in the Commerce Department of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) related to his service promotion.
It may be noted that Syngkon is also the general secretary of the Voice of the People Party (VPP).
Syngkon in his writ petition filed in the High Court stated that NEHU wrongly recorded the year of his promotion under the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) from Stage 1 to Stage 2 as April 27, 2009 instead of 2006.
This according to him is an error, which will adversely affect his future prospects of promotion according to seniority.
Syngkon has sent letters to the university requesting for correction of the error and subsequently served a legal notice on December 19, 2022.
Despite the representations, no response has been forthcoming from the university, which compelled him to approach the High Court by way of a writ petition.
During today’s hearing of the case, Acting Chief Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew examined the materials on record, the letters submitted by Syngkon to NEHU including the representation sent in March 2017.
Justice Thangkhiew observed that Syngkon was correct when he claimed that his requests have not been attended to by NEHU.
“In that view of the matter, without commenting on the merits of the case, the respondent university is directed to address the last representation or legal notice of the petitioner preferably within a period of three months,” Justice Thangkhiew said in his order.
